EV Charger Installation
Out here, home charging isn't a convenience — it's the whole ballgame. Public chargers are thin on the ground in the Sierra Nevada, and a Level 2 charger in your garage or driveway means you start every morning with a full battery. A standard outlet adds only a trickle of range overnight; a properly sized Level 2 circuit charges several times faster, and installed correctly it's one of the simplest electrical upgrades a home can get.
Sizing the circuit correctly
An EV charger is one of the largest continuous loads in a house, and the NEC treats continuous loads specially: the circuit must be sized at 125 percent of the charger's draw. So the job starts with a load calculation on your panel. Many homes can carry a 40- or 50-amp charging circuit as-is; others need the charger's output dialed down to what the service can support, and some need a panel upgrade first. You'll know which — with the numbers to back it up — before any work starts.
Garage, carport, or outdoors
Mountain properties don't always park the car in a finished garage. Outdoor installs get weather-rated equipment, GFCI protection where the code requires it, and mounting placed so the connector stays out of the snowbank. Hardwired connections are the cleaner, more reliable choice for most permanent installs; a plug-in receptacle can make sense when you want the charger to move with you later.
